The Pocket Check: How Many Cards Do You Really Carry?
Before you pick a wallet, empty your current one onto the table. Here's how we sort the pile.
Sort into three piles
Daily: the cards you touch every week, usually an ID, one or two payment cards and a transit or work badge. Sometimes: insurance, a library card, a backup card. Never: the expired gift card and the loyalty card for a shop that closed.
Most people end up with four to six daily cards. That's the number to shop for, not the size of the pile you started with.
Match the pile to a wallet
| Daily cards | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 | 7-Card Magnetic Wallet | Slimmest profile; the elastic lasts longest at this load |
| 4–6 | Slim 6-Card Stand | Adds a stand and ID window without bulk |
| 6–9 | 9-Card Wallet Stand | Three slots and an ID window |
| 9–10 | 10-Card Wallet Stand | Four slots spread the load evenly |
| Cards + cash | Money Clip Stand | Bills stay flat under a metal clip |
What about the 'sometimes' pile?
Leave it at home in a drawer. A wallet that rides on your phone works best carrying less, and when you do need the insurance card, you'll know the night before.
