How the Snap Holds: Magnets, Cases and 4200 Gauss

Why some magnetic wallets slide off, and why ours stay put.

The number on the box

Gauss measures magnetic field strength. A standard MagSafe accessory sits around 700 Gauss; our N52 magnets are rated to 4200. In practice that's the difference between a wallet that shifts when you pull the phone from your jeans and one that doesn't.

Your case matters as much as the magnet

• Bare iPhone 12 or newer: full hold.
• Official MagSafe or magnetic case: full hold.
• Plain silicone, leather or rubber case without a ring: no hold. Use a stick-on wallet instead.
• iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini: the wallet overhangs the phone; we don't recommend it.

Keep the ring clean

Pocket lint and grit between the case and the wallet reduce the hold more than anything else. Wipe both surfaces now and then and the snap stays sharp.
